Every piece of jewellery from Mistry Gems is designed to be enjoyed for many years. With just a little care, your sterling silver jewellery, gemstone jewellery, sterling silver chains and gold plated jewellery will continue to look beautiful whether worn every day or saved for special occasions.

This guide explains how to care for your jewellery, helping you keep every piece looking its best for years to come.

If you're ever unsure about caring for a particular piece, please Contact Us and we'll be delighted to help.

Caring for Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is a beautiful precious metal that can be enjoyed for many years with the right care. Over time, it may naturally develop a darker appearance, known as tarnish, as it reacts with oxygen and moisture in the air. This is completely normal and is not a fault with your jewellery.

Regular wear often helps keep sterling silver looking brighter, as natural movement can reduce the build-up of tarnish. When your jewellery does need cleaning, gently polish it using a soft silver polishing cloth. For pieces without gemstones, a suitable silver cleaning solution may also be used, following the manufacturer's instructions.

To help preserve your jewellery, we recommend removing it before swimming, showering, exercising or using household cleaning products, as chemicals can dull the finish over time.

Further down this guide you'll find our Jewellery Storage section, with simple tips to help protect your jewellery when it's not being worn.

Caring for Gemstone Jewellery

Every gemstone is unique, and while many are suitable for everyday wear, they all benefit from a little extra care.

Avoid dropping or knocking your jewellery against hard surfaces, as even durable gemstones can chip or become damaged by impact. We also recommend applying perfumes, hairsprays, body lotions and cosmetics before putting on your jewellery, allowing these products to dry first.

To clean gemstone jewellery, simply wipe it gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners or prolonged soaking, as these may affect certain gemstones or their settings.

If you're unsure how to care for a particular gemstone, please Contact Us and we'll be happy to advise.

Caring for Your Chains

Choosing the correct chain is only part of caring for your jewellery. Looking after your sterling silver chain properly will help keep it looking beautiful and reduce unnecessary wear over time.

Fine chains should be removed before sleeping, exercising or carrying out activities where they may become caught or twisted.

In particular, Snake Chains have a smooth, flexible construction that can become permanently damaged if sharply bent or kinked. If a Snake Chain becomes dented or creased, the links may weaken and eventually break. Taking a little extra care when wearing and storing your chain will help preserve its appearance and strength.

Heavier gemstone pendants should always be paired with a chain that offers suitable support. Choosing the correct chain thickness not only improves durability but also creates a more balanced and attractive look.

If you're unsure which chain is most suitable for your pendant, visit our Necklace & Chain Length Guide for expert advice.

Gold Plated Jewellery

Our gold plated jewellery is crafted from 925 sterling silver and finished with a quality 1 micron layer of gold plating, creating a beautiful warm golden finish that combines the elegance of gold with the strength of a sterling silver base.

Unlike many gold plated jewellery pieces that use only a very thin flash plating, our jewellery features a 1 micron layer of gold plating, providing a thicker, more durable finish that can be enjoyed for many years with the correct care.

To help preserve the gold finish, we recommend removing your jewellery before showering, swimming, exercising or applying perfumes, lotions and cosmetics. When not being worn, store your jewellery safely in the recycled Indian sari gift pouch supplied with your order, helping to protect it from scratches, dust, moisture and everyday wear.

With the correct care, your gold plated jewellery will retain its beautiful finish for many years.

Jewellery Storage

Proper storage plays an important part in keeping your jewellery looking its best.

Every order from Mistry Gems is presented in one of our colourful gift pouches, lovingly handcrafted from recycled Indian saris. These reusable pouches are not only beautiful but also provide an excellent place to store your jewellery when it is not being worn, helping to protect it from dust, scratches, humidity and everyday exposure to the elements.

Where possible, store each piece of jewellery separately to prevent chains becoming tangled and gemstones rubbing against one another.

When travelling, fastening necklace clasps before storing them can help reduce tangling and protect finer chains from unnecessary wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why has my sterling silver jewellery become darker?

Sterling silver naturally reacts with the air over time, creating a layer of tarnish. This is completely normal and can usually be removed with a silver polishing cloth.

Why are the brass or copper bands on my spinner ring changing colour?

Many of our spinner rings combine sterling silver, brass and copper to create their distinctive multi-metal design. Brass and copper naturally react with oxygen, moisture and everyday wear, so they may develop a darker patina or tarnish more quickly than sterling silver. This is a natural characteristic of these metals and not a fault with your jewellery.

Everyone's skin chemistry is slightly different, so some people may notice the brass or copper bands change colour more quickly than others. Factors such as perspiration, humidity, skincare products and everyday environmental conditions can all influence how these metals naturally age over time.

Many customers appreciate this evolving finish, as it gives each spinner ring its own unique character. If you prefer to restore the original shine, the brass and copper bands can usually be polished using a suitable jewellery polishing cloth or metal polish designed for these metals.

Can I shower or swim wearing my jewellery?

We recommend removing your jewellery before showering, swimming or using hot tubs. Soaps, chlorine, salt water and other chemicals may dull the finish of sterling silver, affect gold plating and, in some cases, damage certain gemstones.

Can I sleep wearing my necklace?

Although many people do, we recommend removing necklaces before sleeping, particularly finer chains. This helps prevent unnecessary wear, tangling and accidental damage.

Can I use silver dip to clean my jewellery?

Silver cleaning solutions may be suitable for plain sterling silver jewellery. However, jewellery containing gemstones should normally be cleaned using a soft polishing cloth unless the cleaning product specifically states that it is safe for gemstone jewellery.

How should I store my jewellery?

Store your jewellery clean and dry, ideally in the recycled Indian sari gift pouch supplied with your order or another soft jewellery pouch. Keeping pieces separate will help prevent scratches and tangled chains.

Can I wear sterling silver every day?

Yes. In fact, regular wear often helps keep sterling silver brighter by reducing the build-up of tarnish. Simply remove your jewellery before swimming, showering or using household chemicals, and clean it occasionally with a soft polishing cloth.

Can I wear my jewellery while exercising?

We recommend removing your jewellery before exercising or playing sports. Physical activity increases the risk of knocks, scratches and accidental damage, while perspiration may also affect the appearance of sterling silver, brass, copper and gold plated jewellery over time.
