K2 is a natural rock composed mainly of pale granite containing distinctive blue Azurite markings. It is also sometimes called K2 Granite, K2 Jasper or Raindrop Azurite, although it is not technically a form of Jasper. The bright blue Azurite developed within the granite after the host rock had formed.
The granite contains minerals including Quartz, Feldspar and Mica, while the contrasting blue areas are formed from Azurite, a copper carbonate mineral. Because these markings occur naturally, every K2 stone displays its own individual pattern.
K2 stone comes from the remote Skardu region of northern Pakistan, close to the Karakoram mountain range and the base of K2 mountain. Its unusual origin and distinctive blue-spotted appearance have made it popular with gemstone collectors and jewellery makers.
