Nayna Mistry sourcing gemstones and working with artisan jewellery makers in India, showing the journey from gemstone selection to handcrafted sterling silver jewellery.

Want to learn more about the story behind Mistry Gems?

This behind-the-scenes article shares how I source gemstones, work with trusted artisan workshops in India and bring each jewellery collection to life.

If you'd like to discover how Mistry Gems began, meet the founder and learn more about the journey behind the business, visit our About Mistry Gems page.

When you choose a piece of jewellery from Mistry Gems, you're choosing far more than a beautiful gemstone.

Every gemstone has its own remarkable journey, from deep within the Earth to skilled gemstone cutters and artisan workshops in India, before finally becoming a handcrafted piece of jewellery designed to be treasured for years to come.

Since founding Mistry Gems in 2006, I have travelled regularly to India to personally source gemstones, meet skilled artisans and build long-term relationships with trusted family-run workshops. These sourcing trips allow me to personally hand-select many of the gemstones used throughout the Mistry Gems collections, ensuring every piece reflects the quality, individuality and craftsmanship that our customers have come to expect.

Building Relationships, Not Just Buying Jewellery

One of the greatest advantages of travelling to India is being able to work directly with the people who create our jewellery.

Rather than simply selecting finished jewellery from large wholesale collections, I have built trusted relationships with family-run workshops and gemstone suppliers over many years.

These partnerships allow me to understand how the jewellery is made, collaborate closely throughout the production process, discuss designs directly with skilled artisans and maintain the high standards of craftsmanship that are so important to Mistry Gems.

Hand-Selecting Gemstones

Every sourcing trip is a little different, but one thing never changes – I always enjoy searching for beautiful gemstones.

My main production partner has worked with me since the start of Mistry Gems and understands exactly the quality, craftsmanship and designs I'm looking for. They supply many of the gemstones used in the Mistry Gems collection and create much of the finished jewellery.

However, I also visit specialist gemstone cutters and polishers to search for unusual stones that aren't readily available through my production partner.

These skilled craftsmen source rough gemstones from around the world before carefully cutting and polishing them to reveal their natural beauty.

I spend time looking through trays of newly polished gemstones, selecting the individual stones that stand out for their colour, natural patterns, quality and character. Sometimes it's simply a gemstone that speaks to me.

Those carefully chosen stones are then taken back to my production partner, where together, we decide on the setting and design that will best showcase each individual gemstone.

From Design to Finished Jewellery

The journey from selecting an individual gemstone to creating the finished piece is a collaborative process that combines traditional craftsmanship with thoughtful design.

Rather than simply choosing finished jewellery from a catalogue, many pieces begin with a gemstone that I've personally selected before the jewellery is designed around it.

No two Labradorite gemstones display exactly the same flashes of colour.

Every piece of Turquoise has its own distinctive matrix.

Each Moonstone catches the light differently.

It is these natural differences that make every piece of Mistry Gems jewellery truly one of a kind.

Ethical Sourcing

Ethical sourcing is something I take seriously.

The global gemstone industry is complex and complete traceability is not always possible, particularly with natural gemstones that pass through several stages before reaching the finished piece.

However, wherever possible I choose to work directly with trusted suppliers and family-run workshops that I have known for many years.

This approach gives me greater confidence in the quality of the gemstones, the craftsmanship behind each piece and the people involved throughout the process.

For me, ethical sourcing isn't simply about where a gemstone comes from.

It's about building long-term relationships based on trust, fairness, respect and transparency.

Handcrafted Sterling Silver Jewellery

Every piece of Mistry Gems jewellery is handcrafted in 925 sterling silver by skilled artisans.

Many of the workshops I work with have been creating jewellery for generations, combining traditional techniques with contemporary designs that allow the gemstone to remain the true focal point.

Each piece is carefully finished by hand before making its journey from India to its new home.

Beautifully Presented with Care

Every piece of jewellery is carefully inspected, beautifully presented and securely packaged before it leaves Mistry Gems.

Most orders arrive in one of our colourful signature gift pouches, handcrafted from recycled Indian sarees. Wherever possible, we carefully choose a pouch that complements the gemstone you've selected, making every order feel even more personal.

Our reusable fabric pouches are designed to be treasured long after your jewellery arrives, providing a beautiful way to store and help protect your sterling silver from dust, scratches and everyday exposure to the elements.

Selected pieces are presented in our premium Mistry Gems gift box, and every order includes a jewellery care card with simple tips to help keep your jewellery looking its best for years to come.

We believe that receiving your jewellery should feel just as special as choosing it, with every detail reflecting the care, craftsmanship and personal service that are at the heart of Mistry Gems.

Every Piece Has a Story

Every sourcing trip reminds me why I love what I do.

From discovering unusual gemstones and working alongside skilled cutters and polishers to seeing finished pieces come to life in the workshop, every stage of the journey helps create jewellery that's as individual as the people who wear it.

I hope it gives you even greater confidence in the care, craftsmanship and passion behind every piece of Mistry Gems jewellery.
